As Managing Director of Barnbrook Systems Ltd and Chair of the South Central Regional Defence & Security Cluster (SCRDSC), I have the privilege of working at the heart of one of the UK’s most capable and strategically important defence regions. Over the past year, it has become increasingly clear that regional leadership, collaboration, and innovation will be central to strengthening the UK’s defence and security resilience.

The SCRDSC was established to bring together the outstanding capability that already exists across South Central England — and to ensure organisations of all sizes can access the opportunities, partnerships and pathways they need to grow, innovate and contribute to national security priorities.

Why I Stepped Forward to Chair the Cluster
My career in advanced engineering and manufacturing has shown me just how much expertise, ingenuity and specialist capability sits within our region. At Barnbrook Systems, we see it every day — from breakthrough technologies to exceptional engineering talent.

But I’ve also seen how fragmented the landscape can feel for SMEs, innovators and established suppliers. Too often, opportunities sit behind complex frameworks or siloed communication channels.

I took on the role of Chair because I firmly believe that our region deserves a strong, unified voice — one that can bring industry, academia, innovators and government together to share opportunities, strengthen supply chain resilience, accelerate innovation, support sovereign capability, and showcase what South Central England can deliver.

A Region Rich in Defence and Security Capability
South Central of England is home to an extraordinary mix of defence and security strengths: advanced aerospace and aviation engineering, a significant maritime and naval supply chain, growing cyber, autonomous air and sea drones and secure‑tech sectors, world‑class universities, and a thriving base of specialist SMEs.

Supporting SMEs — A Personal Priority
As the MD of an SME myself, I understand the practical challenges smaller organisations face when trying to access defence programmes: limited visibility into opportunities, complex procurement frameworks, barriers to innovation funding, and relationship-building challenges.

Through the SCRDSC, we are working to improve access to major programmes, facilitate introductions with primes and government, support innovation pathways, and strengthen the region’s collective voice.

Collaboration Across the Region
The Cluster works closely with organisations such as the Farnborough Aerospace Consortium (FAC), academic partners, innovation bodies and local authorities. My aim is to ensure that the Cluster adds value by aligning efforts rather than duplicating them.

Priorities for the Year Ahead
The SCRDSC is focusing on mapping capability, strengthening partnerships, supporting SMEs, developing communities of practice, and expanding our programme of events and showcases.

A Vision for South Central England
My vision is clear: a region recognised nationally and internationally for its defence and security leadership, innovation and industrial strength. Success means a highly connected ecosystem, stronger partnerships, greater SME participation and collaboration, increased investment, and a resilient, future-ready supply chain.

An Open Invitation
If you are part of the defence or security ecosystem — an established supplier, an SME, an innovator, a university or a new entrant — I invite you to engage with the Cluster. By joining our community, you’ll gain access to collaboration opportunities, innovation pathways, regional intelligence, networking and a stronger collective voice.

Together, we can unlock the full potential of South Central England and strengthen the UK’s defence and security future.
